Protection That Does Not Require a Ladder
Tamarac began in the 1960s as an active adult community of two-bedroom, maintenance-free homes, and impact windows fit that idea well. Developer Ken Behring built the first section east of State Road 7 in 1963, and the city incorporated that August. Today the median age in Tamarac is 47.5, and about 26 percent of residents are 65 or older. Many of the owners we speak with want protection that does not mean climbing a ladder or carrying heavy panels.
The housing
Census estimates show about 37 percent of Tamarac housing was built in the 1970s, with a median build year of 1981. Housing is split between detached houses (37 percent), attached villas and townhomes (13 percent) and condo buildings. About three quarters of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Impact glass versus shutters for older owners
Impact windows need no setup: the protection is in the glass. For owners who leave for the summer, that means the home is covered whether or not a neighbor comes by. Where full replacement is not in the budget, motorized roll-down shutters over the largest openings are a close second, because they close with a switch. Accordion shutters are lighter than panels but still need someone to slide and lock them.
Easy-operating hardware matters too. Casement windows with low-effort cranks, single-hung units with balanced sashes and sliders with smooth rollers all make daily use easier. We bring samples so you can try them.
Villas and 55+ communities
Many Tamarac communities have associations with design standards, and in attached villas the association may control windows and exterior walls. We quote to those standards and give you the documents to submit for approval.
Wilma and the north-central cities
Hurricane Wilma crossed Broward in October 2005 with winds estimated at 80 to 100 mph for about five hours, and more than 862,800 Florida Power & Light customers lost electricity. Long outages hit retirees hard. Operable impact windows can be opened for air when the power is out, without exposing the house.
Sliders and screen rooms
Many villas and houses open to a screened patio through a sliding door. A screen cage does not stop flying debris, so the glass behind it still needs protection. An impact slider with smooth rollers is easier to open every day than an old aluminum door with a worn track.
Planning with family
Owners often make this decision with adult children who live elsewhere. We put the full scope in writing, opening by opening, so everyone can review the same information.
Golf course lots
Tamarac takes its name from the nearby Tamarac Country Club, and golf course lots are part of many neighborhoods. On homes that back onto a course, rear windows and sliders face open ground and the occasional stray ball as well as storms. Laminated glass holds together when struck, which owners on those lots appreciate.
Permits
Window and shutter work requires a permit in Tamarac. Check with the city's building department for its submittal list; we prepare the product approvals and opening plan. Call (954) 375-7681 for a visit.

Tamarac Questions
What is the easiest storm protection to use?
Impact windows need no setup at all. If you prefer shutters, motorized roll-downs close with a switch and are the easiest shutter type.
I leave Tamarac for the summer. What should I install?
Impact glass protects the house without anyone closing shutters. Many seasonal owners choose it for that reason.
Does my villa association control my windows?
Often, in attached villas. Check your documents; we provide product sheets and an opening list for the approval request.
